Celebrate The Small Things -- Dec 9

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

Today I'm celebrating...

  • I started using a new medicine last week, in hopes of controlling the nerve pain from my occipital neuralgia (click here for more information on what this is and why I have it). I'm happy to say, so far, so good! I still have pain, but the medicine puts a good dent in it.

  • I made my first body butter in two years! My aging skin (boo...hiss...) had started to really dry out a few years ago, so I started making my own soaps, in hopes of healing and moisturizing my skin (click here to see some cool soaps I made). I also started on the path of lotions and body butters. As soon as I started getting into the swing of things, I had a very bad arthritis flare up in my thumb (click here to see my very helpful thumb brace) and had to stop my new diy adventures for a while. I lost momentum and here we are two years later. But I am happy to report that my comeback body butter is great! I've been slathering it on after I get out of the shower, and periodically on my hands during the day. It's good!

  • my awesome brother. It seems like I mention how great my brother is every few months, but he really is! This is what he sent me in the mail last week:

  • my children's humor. My son got glasses a couple of weeks ago, and here is what he did the other day to Emmie...

What are you celebrating?

Vincent Van Gogh #AtoZChallenge

...Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most famous and adored painters of all time.  His work, coupled with his life story, is heart wrenching to me, which makes me appreciate and love him even more. Although we can now look at his paintings and acknowledge the genius that they are, and he was, Vincent never experienced admiration for his work during his lifetime.

For a great, yet sad, take on Vincent Van Gogh, watch "Vincent and The Doctor" (click here for the IMDb page) ...it's a Doctor Who episode that I think any Van Gogh fan would appreciate, regardless if you are a Doctor Who fan or not.

My last cell phone case was Vincent inspired (The Starry Night)...

And one of my favorite paintings of his, Cafe Terrace at Night, hangs in my bedroom...

And remember that lonely nail polish that I mentioned in my 'A' post?  Yup, that's Van Gogh inspired too!  And yes, part of the reason why I bought it was for the name, it's called, "Starry Starry Night".

And then there is this cool exhibit that I found while surfing the internet...

Who is your favorite artist, and do you own any of their works?

Unexpected Gifts #AtoZChallenge

...unexpected gifts.  The best gifts are the unexpected ones.  The best surprise gift I ever had was my daughter :)  But I've had some material gifts too, and that's the focus on today's post.

Recently, my brother sent me this...

A Doctor Who license plate cover!  He said that when he saw it he knew he had to buy it for me...best bro ever.

Another surprise gift was this...

My friend Dany (same friend that I mentioned in Saturday's post) brought me this when she came to the US and stopped by for a visit.  It's now my favorite mug.

And the last one that I'll mention was a gift to my husband from the team he coaches.  How perfect of a gift is this?!

What's the best unexpected gift you've either given or received?

Time Lords #AtoZChallenge

...Time Lords.  Yes, like from Doctor Who.  Those who are Whovians will understand, and those who don't, head on over to Amazon Prime and watch some Doctor Who!

My very favorite Doctor is eleven, played by Matt Smith.  I love the quirky, 'madman with a box' that he portrays.  My second favorite is David Tennant, with "The Girl In The Fireplace" being my favorite episode with him.  And even if he only appeared for one episode, the 50th Anniversary special, I really loved John Hurt's Doctor.  That special is one of my favorites as it has all three of my favorite Doctors in it...guaranteed to bring a smile to my face.

My friend Dany gave me this! It hangs on my refrigerator so I can look at it everyday :)

Are you a Doctor Who fan?  Who is your favorite Time Lord?
Not a Doctor Who fan...then what show is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face?

Vashta Nerada

An A to Z Challenge from the point of view of the newest member of the family...Emmie is a 4-ish year old pit bull mix that we rescued on March 20, 2015.

The humans think I'm crazy, but I'm hunting the Vashta Nerada!  They live in the shadows!

Katie here...if you don't know what the Vashta Nerada are, then go here...it's a Doctor Who reference.  Yup, Emmie is a Doctor fan too.  That's the real reason why we adopted her ;)

Are you a Doctor Who fan?

Celebrate The Small Things -- Nov 21

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

Let's start my celebrations by mentioning how awesome my soaking tub is.  With all the cold weather happening, it's been nice to have a nice soak in a hot bath filled with epsom salts.  Just the thought of it makes me want to have a bath right now.

Speaking of cold weather...I'd also like to celebrate the fact that I don't live in Buffalo, NY.  As much as I love snow, the amount of snow those people are dealing with is just crazy!  I hope it slows down for them.

Stay safe Buffalo!  Here is a link if you'd like to see some incredible pictures posted from Buffalo and some pretty funny tweets.  One guy used the wall of snow as a cooler for his beer!

Lastly, but certainly not least, I'd like to celebrate my awesome hubby who gave me an early anniversary present...silicone TARDIS molds.  He knows me so well :)  Here is what I made with them...

Six Word Saturday -- Doctor Who Style!

It's Six Word Saturday time...

We get a new Doctor today!

I'm referring to Doctor Who of course!  Peter Capaldi makes his debut today as our new Doctor.  While Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor (I'm still heartbroken about him leaving), I'm willing to give Capaldi a shot.

Welcome Mr. Capaldi, and please don't make me cry too much over my missed "bow-tie" Doctor!

Six Word Saturday is hosted by Call Me Kate at Show My Face.  If you'd like to join in on the fun, then describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words and comment down below!

Celebrate The Small Things -- August 1

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating our local library.  Just a few years ago our library was renovated and among the new improvements was a teen center.  They have video games, board games, and books of course!  My daughter has been biking (or sometimes I'll just drive her) to the library to meet her friends and "hang out", making use of all the cool stuff the library has to offer.  It's great for her, and I think my son appreciates having the house mostly to himself :)

I'm also celebrating my new Doctor Who themed ring tone for my new cell phone!  I was very excited when I got my first phone call the other day and heard my Doctor music :)  I wish I could make my house phone do the same thing!

What are you celebrating?

How To Keep Busy While Recovering: YouTube

http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/p/a-to-z-challenge-sign-uplist-2014.html

It can be used for education or entertainment.  I've found videos on how to dye fabric to interviews with rock stars.  My husband even did a $800 fix on our truck by watching a video, doing it himself, and saving us the money.  There is something for everybody and if you ever need to find an answer to a problem, chances are someone has made a YouTube video on it.

Want to know where to start playing guitar?  Check out Justin...

Want to hear the greatest rendition of a mediocre song made awesome by a couple of average Joes sitting in a pizzaria?  Prepare to have your mind blown.

Do you miss Axl Rose in his prime?  Check out who he's playing with...
**Warning:  Explicit lyrics**

Want to see the funniest geeky clip with a Batman AND Doctor Who?

Are your children Frozen obsessed?  Check out this alternate ending...
(Be warned:  there are a lot of these "How it Should Have Ended" videos and you can be sucked in for hours).

Ahhh...Youtube...it's endless hours of watching more and more stuff that you never even planned to watch.

Have you been sucked in to YouTube?  Do you use it more for educational or entertainment purposes?

How To Keep Busy While Recovering: Who? Doctor Who...That's Who

Yes, I know I've already talked about watching TV with my Amazon Instant Video and Netflix posts...but Doctor Who is so awesome that it deserves it's own post.  It's adventurous and funny and makes me feel better when I watch it.  And feeling better and being in a positive state of mind is helpful with the healing process.
http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/p/a-to-z-challenge-sign-uplist-2014.html

Note to self:  do not write a book on Doctor Who...just a short post is sufficient :)

My Short History with Doctor Who
In 2005 the BBC did a reboot of Doctor Who.  All episodes of DW before the reboot are known as Doctor Who Classics.  I've tried watching several of the Classic episodes, but I can't seem to get into them.  While the stories themselves may be good, I just can't get past the way it was filmed.  Die hard Whovians will probably hate me for not loving the Classic Who's, but such is life.  I can't please everyone.

Anyway, I started watching the 2005 reboot about 3 years ago.  My husband and I were bored over the summer with nothing to watch and we had just gotten Netflix streaming, so we decided to give Doctor Who a shot.  I pretty much loved it after just a few episodes.  And after David Tennant came...oh my...he was just great.  In addition to Tennant being a great actor, he has the best hair, ever, on the planet.  I have thing for hair.  Don't ask.

My Favorites

Favorite Doctor:  As much love as I have for Tennant, my favorite Doctor is Matt Smith, aka:  the bow tie Doctor (that's what my son calls him).  He was the first Doctor I ever dreamt about.

Favorite Companion:  River Song.  I love how strong of a character she is!  And the chemistry between Alex Kingston and Matt Smith is amazing.

Smith, Tennant, and Hurt
Favorite Episodes:
The Girl in the Fireplace
Vincent and the Doctor
Blink
(not necessarily in that order)
I also really loved the 50th Anniversary special.  Tennant and Smith were absolutely fantastic!  I really wish that John Hurt could have stuck around a bit more...maybe someday they'll bring him back.  He was such a great Doctor.

Favorite Person to Watch With: my son...he's 10...pretty sure that's the target audience even though Doctor Who is really for anyone of any age.  I just have the most fun watching with my boy :)

BTW...currently, Amazon Prime has all 7 seasons of Doctor Who.

Are you a fellow Whovian? When did you start watching? Who is your favorite Doctor? What are your favorite episodes?
