Ankle Replacement and Subtalar Fusion Updates

As some of you may know, last January I had subtalar fusion in my right foot...this is after having a total ankle replacement in the same foot a year prior (Dec 2013). I also had total ankle replacement in my other foot prior to that (June 2013). To read about my ankle replacement journeys, please click here. Below are my updates...

A short summary of the Ankle Replacements...

Going into my ankle replacements, I was very hopeful. My surgeon told me that the replacement surgeries would take all the pain I was experiencing in my feet away. Did it? Well, not really. The best thing to come of the surgery is that my “bounce back time” has greatly improved. Meaning that if I overdue it today, I usually get a restart tomorrow. Before the surgery it would be days. And a couple times I overdid it so badly that it actually took several weeks...meaning that I either could barely walk on it, or, on better days, I was using a cane to get around. So that's the major pro of having the total ankle replacements.

The negative effect of the ankle replacement surgeries is that I can only stand or walk around for about 10-15 minutes before I'm completely done for the day. This is extremely frustrating and severely limits me.

Subtalar Fusion time...

Because I was so limited, I went ahead with the subtalar fusion in my right foot in January 2015. My surgeon said that I still have a lot of arthritis in the rest of the foot (really, both feet) and this may give me some relief. I wasn't as hopeful going into this surgery, but I was trying to remain optimistic. I knew it would be a much longer recovery time, but I also knew I could soldier through if it meant making a difference in my pain while walking/standing. The plan was that if this worked, I would get the left foot done after the right was was completely healed.

When I saw my surgeon last, in September, he told me that I needed to give the fusion a full year to heal before passing judgment. Well, in another week it will be a full year. This is my judgment...I've wasted the last year trying to rehab from the subtalar fusion and it is no better than before the surgery. If anything, it's more painful when I walk.

I've been putting this blog post off for a while now. I guess I was hoping that things would turn around and my ankle would suddenly start feeling better. I hate sounding so negative, but I need to be honest in hopes that it may help someone else.

Not every surgery is going to be a success for every person, and I know that with my SED it makes everything way more complicated than the average person. Up until this point, I've been very lucky with my surgeries. But the past three surgeries (both my ankle replacements and now the subtalar fusion) have been a let down for me, especially the last one. To think that I've wasted the past year is a hard pill to swallow and it depresses me whenever I think about it.

But, things could be worse. At least I have my feet. At least I can walk. I have a supportive family and a husband that is a superman for me. And my kids are 90% of the time, pretty awesome (they're teenagers, so that accounts for the other 10%!)  And I have this squooshy face to cheer me up...

What does the future hold? I'm not sure. I know I won't be having subtalar fusion in my other foot, unless all of a sudden that foot starts to hurt worse than the other. I may have to look into a scooter sometime in my future (God help my local public!).

Mostly, I'm hoping for a miracle breakthrough in medicine...where they can grow bone back and instead of giving you metal and plastic replacements, you'll get a new and improved bone instead. How cool would that be?

Celebrate The Small Things -- Dec 18

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of Viklit, Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating...

  • Finished basements.  I could really write an entire blog post on the joys of finished basements, but I'll give you the highlights...
  1. I'm so happy that my children have a 'kid cave' that they can go to when their friends come over. Out of sight, out of mind I say...that's in the Best Parenting 101 handbook, right?
  2. My husband and I can shut the door to the basement and it dampens the noise. This is especially helpful when there is a room full of teenage girls.
  3. I rarely have to go down there and witness the horrorshow that it is. Of course, when I do have to venture down there (like yesterday) I want to just burn it down...but all the rest of the time it's awesome! Hey, guess who's cleaning the basement this weekend?

  • After feeling sick all week, I think I'm finally on the upswing (I'm not saying this too loudly, as I don't want to jinx it).  I will spare you all the details...believe me, you don't want to know!
  • I won a book! LG Keltner from Writing Off the Edge had a giveway of her new book and I won. Thanks LG for making me feel special! I shall now go buy a lottery ticket while my luck is still hot.
  • Today is the last day of school before Christmas break for my kids! I'm looking forward to spending some time with my babies!

What are you celebrating?

Celebrate The Small Things--Dec 4

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of Viklit, Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • I'm back!  I haven't posted in such a long time...what a loser I am.  I have a hard time with the spring and fall weather changes, so I've had a lot more bad days than good lately...but I'm going to make an effort to blog a bit more often...and by often, I mean actually posting more than once in a blue moon!  Many thanks to Lexa Cain for not kicking me off the "Celebrate" list!
  • The botox injections that I had into my back/neck at the end of August worked a bit better than the steroids I was getting.  I just went back this Tuesday for a second set (they last anywhere from 3-6 months), and they went a little smoother this time.  Note to self...do a blog post on this.
  • I had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We normally spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws, and this year two of my brother-in-laws (with their families) were there to celebrate with us.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love my in-laws?  They are the best...I am so blessed.
  • My hubby and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary last weekend.  Amazingly, I haven't driven him completely crazy just yet ;)  I love you Jason!!!

Celebrate The Small Things -- Sept 25

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of Viklit, Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • A brief return of health to the house! At least for the moment. My kids have already missed a handful of school days because they've been sick...and school only started three weeks ago. Let's hope they've gotten all the cooties out of the way for a while!

  • My new laptop. Our old laptop has been dropped one too many times and you can see some of its guts if you hold it just the right way...not good. Currently, I'm working on saving and moving files to the new computer.

That's pretty much it...my foot has been pretty crappy over the last few months...hoping my new orthotics will help, but I don't get them for another week so I'm making due until they come in. Say a little prayer that it doesn't rain too much in the meantime!

What are you celebrating?

When Did I Get So Old?

Sunday night I had the opportunity to go out and see my best friend perform on stage for the first time. It was great fun and I felt like myself...a feeling that has been missing lately because rehabbing my latest surgery has felt like forever! Mike (my bestie) has been playing the guitar for a couple of years now and was looking to jam with someone. He found this event, called Flash Band, and decided to give it a go. (For more information on Flash Band, go here). Basically, you meet other local musicians, and then get together to play a show after only knowing each other for a month. The theme of Sunday night's Flash Band was 'British Invasion', which was awesome!

A wonderful night was had on Sunday, followed by a miserable Monday morning for me. Oh goodie. I woke up the next day feeling like someone beat the shit out of me. I hurt so bad all over. After seeing my kids out the door for their first day of school, I went back to bed and stayed there until early afternoon. Because of my medical condition, I know that I need to take things easy otherwise I end up regretting it, but this reaction caught me off guard. After all, I wasn't on my feet at all...Mike was kind enough to get me a seated ticket. I guess I thought that since I wouldn't be standing, that I would be okay. And my feet were okay...it's the rest of my body that objected! Too much time in the car...too much driving...too long being out. Man, I feel old! Back in the day, we used to go out all night long and I'd get up the next morning and function like a normal person...notsomuch anymore.

Ah, the joys of living with chronic pain. Sometimes, you never know when you'll have those bad days...they just hit you without warning. This is why I plan as much as I can...because I know that even with all the planning in the world, sometimes it is all for naught. I guess that next time I plan to see Flash Band (because there will be a next time--I love live music) I'll need my hubby to drive me. And I probably won't be able to stay to watch all the bands :( Oh, well. It was still worth it to be a part of Mike's fan club! :)

Mike and my daughter, jamming :)
