How To Keep Busy While Recovering: Documentaries Are Fun

Documentaries cover so many topics that, if you haven't already, there is no reason to not give them a try.  You can find these kind of films on food, war, politics, religion, history, music, famous figures...and the list goes on.

I've watched documentaries on the use of medicine in ancient Egypt to a fantastic film on gay orthodox Jews (Trembling Before G-D).  I've watched band documentaries (via Hulu Plus) on Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, and Queen.  Did you know that Queen's guitarist, Brian May, made his own guitar?  These are the type of cool things you learn when you are laid up in bed and want to watch something a little different on television.

Probably my favorite documentary that I've watched has been Sound City.  It's a film directed by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, about a recording studio in California that recorded a massive amount of famous bands and albums.  It was recommended to me by my best friend and it was a great watch.

There are documentaries out there for everyone.  Do you have any favorites?  Is there a genre you tend to be drawn to?

  1. Documentaries are the best way to see humans at their strangest. I gravitate to the odd balls. A few excellent ones I've seen are Urban Explorers (about people who go out and find the strange abandoned placed in large urban areas including sewers and factories), Who the F**k is Jackson Pollock (a look into the art world from a layman's eyes), Man on Wire (an almost thriller about the guy who tightrope walked between the World Trade Center Towers before it opened) and King of Kong (a look into the strangely cut throat world of competitive video game playing). Great post and hope your recovery goes well!

  2. I love documentaries on areas where I'd like to travel (but will probably never see), and documentaries on certain periods of history.

    1. Yes! Travel documentaries...living vicariously through someone else's eyes. I'm all over that!

  3. I love documentaries - most of the time they're the best thing on TV. Saw a great one yesterday on HBO called Paycheck to Paycheck. Highly recommend. Hope you get well soon!

  5. I love how you learn things from documentaries that you didn't even know you wanted to know. I think I have three documentaries on Queen on videotape somewhere around here. They were my favourite band growing up. If I remember rightly that guitar, nicknamed the Red Special, was fashioned from wood from the mantlepiece of the family fireplace. You can't make that stuff up!
    Great post!
