Celebrate The Small Things -- August 19

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

Today I'm celebrating...

  • my baby girl turned Sweet Sixteen! I can't believe how grown up she is already...seems like just yesterday that she was so itty bitty and fit perfectly in my arms.
  • my husband and kids! Having the party last weekend took a lot out of me, even thought I purposely tried to take it easy! I guess I did more than my body could handle, and I ended up pretty achy on Sunday and Monday. If it wasn't for my hubby and kids, things wouldn't have gotten done. They all helped with set up, clean up, food prep, taking care of Emmie (our dog and my bestie), and more stuff that I'm sure I just can't remember. That's one nice thing about having older kiddos...they can help!
  • acupuncture... Having an acupuncture treatment on Tuesday really helped my body recover from the weekend. I really love acupuncture...a lot. I've blogged about it many, many times. For anyone interested in reading more about my acupuncture adventures, just type 'acupuncture' in the search bar on the right.
  • Jim Gaffigan...When I'm not feeling well, I like to watch funny stuff on tv to help myself feel better. Gaffigan is, by far, my favorite comedian, and Netflix now has another two specials of his available to watch. If you are in need of a good laugh, check him out! For anyone who doesn't have Netflix, I will link his website here.

Celebrate The Small Things - July 8

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

Today I'm celebrating...

  • A visit from my brother! He makes me laugh...a lot :) I got to see him and his family a couple of weeks ago when he drove from Nebraska to visit with my parents in Delaware for a week. My husband drove me and the kids to DE so we could see them for a few days, and while we were there, two of my aunts and my cousin and her kids came too. It was like a little mini family reunion.

  • Being first in line at the gas station to get my emissions test done for my daughter's car. In total, I spent about 30 minutes getting that done. Not too bad! It certainly beats the two hours and forty five minutes I spent at the DMV registering and titling it! grrrrr

  • My acupuncturist. My hands have been hurting a lot over the past few weeks and my last two acupuncture treatments have helped a bunch. I'm hoping that after another treatment next week, the arthritis that has been flaring will finally calm down. (This is part of the reason why I have yet to post about my facet joint shots...waiting for the hands to feel better so I don't have to do the two-finger-pecking-routine on the keyboard).

  • Our new car! Our 2003 Ford Taurus finally died, so we picked up a 2015 Prius with only 7,000 miles on it...it was a pretty good deal. For those who have not been in, or drove a Prius before...they are so weird! You push a power button to turn the car on, a parking button to put it in park, and it barely makes any noise at all while it sits idle. It's very strange and different, but in a good way. Let's hope that my husband gets a good long time out of this car and doesn't kill it!

  • Some beautiful local views. I dropped off my daughter to paintball the other day, and this was the view...

What are you celebrating?

Celebrate The Small Things -- Dec 19

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

The first thing I'm celebrating this week is indoor plumbing.  It's something that I think we normally take for granted, but it was super cold and windy one night this week, and just the thought of having to go outside in that weather gave me the chills!  I love my inside toilet :)

Let's all take a minute to celebrate Amazon.com, as I've done most of my Christmas shopping (yet again) on this website.  Although I have a lot of medical problems that keep me from properly shopping (like out in the malls and such), I've been very lucky finding many things on Amazon, and their shipping policies are awesome when you have Amazon Prime, which I do.  How are you guys doing with your holiday shopping?

I'm also grateful that I chose to trust my gut and get a second opinion for my daughter's shoulder.  The new orthopedist said she has "little league shoulder".  He said that with proper meds (anti-inflammatories), rest, and rehab, she should get better.  Just in case, I've brought her back to acupuncture...to see if a little Eastern medicine can help along the Western medicine!

I apologize to everyone for the lack of visits...I'm still having a hard time typing with my thumb brace.  Seems like my hand gets sore rather quickly.  I promise to make it up to all of you guys once I'm all healed up!

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates!

Celebrate the Small Things -- Oct 24

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

The biggest thing we are celebrating this week is FOX...as in the channel.  I don't know what happened, but we lost FOX a couple of months ago.  Since we don't have cable, we rely on our Roku box and an actual antenna that is set up in the attic to watch tv (we're so old school).  Our antenna provides us with "regular" channels (i.e. CBS, NBC, ABC).  Last night, while my husband was channel surfing, he discovered that we miraculously have FOX back...and in the middle of the World Series.  You must understand one thing...my husband is a baseball fanatic...a serious crazy man when it comes to baseball.  Getting this channel back during the world series is like a gift from God.  Peace and joy can now, once again, reign in our house.

I'd also like to celebrate my acupuncturist.  She is a wonderful healer who works wonders sometimes when it comes to my aches and pains.  The past couple of weeks have been hard on my body because of the drastic temperature changes (read more about this here).  I feel very blessed that I have an all natural alternative to western pharmaceuticals.

On a lighter note, I'm also celebrating my two new nail polishes that I got for a steal!  I was back at Walgreens this week and picked up a Wet n' Wild polish on sale for $1, and found another polish on the clearance rack that was priced at $2.12.  When the clerk rang me up, he asked if I would like to use my Walgreens rewards.  Um, yes please!  So I had $3 taken off my order.  BAAM!...two awesome new nail polishes for 12 cents!

Happy Weekend!

What are you celebrating?

Voodoo Dirt Helps Arthritis

The drastic temperature changes over the past couple of weeks have been especially hard on my shitty bones, causing my arthritis to kick into overdrive and make me ache all over.  It will be 70 during the day, and drop to the 40's overnight.  Imagine if you took a hot glass straight from the dishwasher and put it in the freezer...it would shatter, right?  Well, my body seems to react with a similar anger to the temperature change.

This past weekend I barely made it out of bed because I was in so much pain.  Luckily, over the past couple of days, the temperature seems to have evened out a bit, although now I'm dealing with the achiness that comes with all this stupid rain!  My acupuncture treatment today has already granted me some relief...thank God.  God bless my acupuncturist...she is a true healer.  I asked for some herbs to help over the next couple of weeks and she gave me this concoction.

I have to take three small teaspoons a day, before meals. The taste is pretty terrible, and it looks like dirt, but all the herbs I've taken in the past have helped.  Let's hope I'm as lucky again this time around!

Here's a closeup of the ingredients:

Don't ask me about the ingredients...the only ones that are recognizable to me are cinnamon and licorice!  But if this bottle of voodoo dirt helps...then bring it on!

Have you ever eaten or taken anything out of the ordinary just to help you feel better?

The Sore Throat Bug Has Gotten My Son

My son is on day three of a sore throat and yesterday he was running a low grade fever in the afternoon.  This morning I was able to convince him to come to acupuncture with me for a treatment, and we were given some very specific instructions by my acupuncturist:

  • Make him lemonade...the homemade kind with real lemons.  Add a little raw sugar or honey to sweeten it, but keep it on the sour side.  Of everything that he drinks today, this should constitute 80% of his intake.  The lemondade should help his throat and help get his gut moving things along.

  • He needs to take three of the Yin Chiao herbs, three times a day until he is all better.  Both my son and I have taken these herbs in the past and have had good results with them.

  • No ice cold drinks or cold foods until he is all better.  Supposedly, cold foods affect the immune system.  As a little side note...my son only had a low grade fever for a few hours yesterday afternoon...about two hours after I let him have a milkshake.  Coincidence?  You decide.

Well, I had him take his first dose of herbs before we left the office, and after eating lunch, he is already complaining that he is bored...which is a good sign!

Do your kids do that?  Start complaining of boredom once they start to feel better?  I guess it's because they can't have friends over, and can't go out and play just yet...so they are stuck in the house for the rest of the day while mom makes sure that whatever bug they caught is really gone and not just faking us all out.

So, we wait today.  And tomorrow, if he is still complaining of boredom more than he is of his sore throat then I'll know to let him out into the wild again :)

Celebrate The Small Things -- July 11

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  Celebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

So remember how last week I thought I had some fraudulent charges to my checking account?  Yeah, turns out that I was in the wrong.  When I sat down to reconcile my checkbook at the end of June, I saw two charges that were charged from Paypal.  So I went to my Paypal account and checked there, and no charges were to be found...which is why I originally thought that I had been hacked.  Well, anyone who has a Paypal account can clearly see that they have been upgrading their website over the past few weeks, and I guess there were some glitches...like not showing charges that had been made!  When I look at my account this week, the charges are there.

Sooo...long story short (too late!)...I'm celebrating that I wasn't hacked!  I've just lost my mind and not remembered stuff.  And Paypal needs to get their shit together with this website upgrade!  Oy....

I'd also like to celebrate my children this week...for being open minded little people.  I brought my daughter in for acupuncture to help heal her sprained shoulder (for pictures and video click here).  My son let me take him in a few months ago for a treatment as well.  I'm glad that they are open minded about alternative forms of medicine.  Hey, let's attribute it to great parenting ;) :)

Acupuncture For Sports Injuries

I mentioned last week that my daughter sprained her shoulder playing softball...well, I took her with me today for an acupuncture treatment.  She's had acupuncture several times before and is an old pro already :)

Here she is waiting for her treatment.  This is pre-needles...

(Totally unrelated...I love the color of my acupuncturist's office!)

First, she had her shoulder massaged a bit to loosen up the muscle. You can even watch a video on your tablet while you have your treatment!

After the massage, the needles go in...here's a shot of the needles in her back and shoulder...

She even let me take a bit of video...she's such a champ!

Bee Therapy?

As I was getting my weekly acupuncture treatment today, my acupuncturist, Tuan, told me about how he suffers from chronic pain in his shoulder due to several injuries to it in his younger years.  He said he had seen a few doctors, and three different doctors told him that he needed surgery on it to relieve the pain.  Even though I've been seeing him for 5 years or so, I've never known that he suffers from chronic pain because he has always seemed in good health.  Tuan told me that for many years now he has been doing bee therapy, also know as apitherapy, to help with the shoulder pain and that he only has to do it every six months or so to find relief.

Bee therapy is exactly what it sounds like...you get stung by honey bees.  Chinese medicine uses the bees to sting the patient on various acupuncture spots.  Tuan says that bee venom has been used since ancient times, going back to the Egyptians.  He uses it on himself, my other acupuncturist, and has had other patients that have found relief with this practice.  The bee venom causes the body's immune system to react strongly, which is what helps patients find relief.

Tuan told me that he just performed a treatment on my other acupuncturist, Thuc Dan, this past Saturday.  He treated her with only five stings, since she is much more sensitive and reacts more than he does.  Tuan says that since everyone's body reacts differently, people will have varying results and require treatments at different rates.  After speaking with Thuc Dan, she told me that after the treatments she feels like she has the flu for a couple of days, with the day after the treatment being the worst.  To feel a bit better, she took some anti-histamine, which helped to relieve some of the symptoms she was suffering from.

This isn't the first time Tuan has told me about bee therapy.  He mentioned it a few years ago when he told me about a patient of his that suffered from multiple sclerosis.  He had been treating her for years and she had found great relief with the treatments.

So, how crazy is this sounding to you?  If you are a regular, “normal” person, you probably think it sounds nuts.  And it sounds crazy to me too...but it also seems like something that I may be open to.  Suffering on a daily basis sucks, plain and simple.  If I could find something that would relieve my pain on a temporary basis...even if it sounds completely nutty...well, why not try it at least once?

Dear Readers...Have I lost it completely?  Or do you think this may have some substance?

Chinese Herbs

I woke up this morning with a headache...oh happy day.  That's always the suckiest way to start a day...in pain.  Sometimes if I drink a ton of water when I wake up I can get the headache to go away.  Not so much today.   Luckily, I had acupuncture this morning.

So my acupuncturist did a little bloodletting again on a few spots on my head (for my original post on bloodletting click here).  She first did a spot on the top of my head, then my temples, then the sinus spots on the inside corner of my eyebrows.  After all of that, the headache went away, although I still felt some pressure in my ears.  I also told her about my throat not feeling “quite right”...it's not a sore throat, it just feels off.  She thinks it's probably just the change in weather that's causing all my symptoms, but recommended that I take some herbs that help with oncoming colds.  I already had some of these left at home, so after returning back home I took 5 pills, as instructed.  She said to take 2-3 doses and see if that helps.  I only have a small amount left in the bottle, so hopefully it will help before I run out.  Luckily, Amazon carries them, so I placed an order that should arrive in a few days (this is the exact one I have and ordered -- Yin Chiao ).

This is not my first time taking Chinese herbs.  Over the past few years I've taken many different concoctions.  Surprisingly (at least it was a surprise to this skeptical former New Yorker), most have worked.

Has anyone else had any luck with Chinese herbs?

One Step Forward...Two Weeks Back

The beginning of last week was awesome.  I was able to put a lot more weight on my ankle and my balancing had started to improve.  Because of these two things, getting around was easier, to the point where I had started using my cane.  I was really improving and was starting to feel more “normal”.

And then Thursday happened.

I had physical therapy on Thursday and did all of my regular exercises...nothing new.  And I ended up hobbling out of the PT office.  That entire afternoon was pretty sucky.  Even if I was just sitting with my foot up, it would just throb.  I tried taking ibuprofin when I got home and then later that night, and it did nothing to help the pain.  Ice didn't help either.  The only thing that helped was if I stayed off of it completely.  So I did.

Both Friday and Saturday weren't much better, although the throbbing was limited to only after I would try to walk on it...so that was a mild improvement.  I went back to using my crutches and tried to put as little weight on it as I could for a few days.  My ankle felt as if I had gone back two weeks.  And the bone that I had the screw put into was what was hurting.  It was tender to the touch.

I had acupuncture Saturday morning and by Sunday it felt a little bit better (usually acupuncture takes a day to “kick in” for me).  Today, Monday, it feels about the same as yesterday, maybe a slight bit better.   It's still tender to the touch...as much as a few days ago.

After explaining everything to my therapist, she said that it could have been how aggressive she was with the distraction last Thursday.  The weird thing is that when she did that, it didn't hurt.  Only afterward, when I tried to walk on it, did I feel pain.  She didn't do much hands on today...gonna give it a rest...and next session she will just go a little easier when distracting.  I'm hoping by my next PT appointment that I will be able to fully walk on my ankle again and can get back to the treadmill.

It's funny how you have to sometimes push your body past it's limits just so you know where your limits are.  The 'ole “I really shouldn't have done that” routine :)  How many of you out there have done something similar?

Acupuncture: How Does This Voodoo Actually Work?

When people hear that I have acupuncture treatments weekly, they often ask, “Does that actually work?”  I'm so tempted to say “No. I just like wasting 2 hours of my time and pissing away my husband's hard earned money for fun”...but I fight the urge and tell them how it really is.  Acupuncture has made a huge difference in my life and I'm so grateful that it was recommended to me.

If you haven't been to acupuncture, let me give you the skinny on the basics.  Acupuncture was started like a million years ago in China and is still practiced today. It's an all natural way to control pain and keep you in good health. The basic treatment is done with very small needles.  Sometimes they can enhance this with electro stim therapy (similar to the way physical therapists use it).   Cupping, bloodletting, and herbs can also be incorporated into your treatments.  I'm sure there is way more involved, but these are the things that I've experienced.

What Happens First?

My acupuncturist escorts me to a private office and we have our “chat”.  I sit down and I'm asked how I've been feeling since my last visit.  After I tell them all my ailments, they feel my pulse on both wrists (to doubly make sure I'm alive) and then I stick out my tongue.  I don't know exactly what all this does, but it's part of the Chinese magic that gets recorded in my chart.  Next, I'm off to the treatment room.

The Treatment Room

I first start out by stripping down to my underwear (settle down!).  This makes it easier for your acupuncturist to have access to all the places that may need treatment.  When I had my cast on my ankle and it was a pain in the ass to get my pants on and off, I just left on my shorts (it was summer at the time).  As long as your knees are available and you have a waistband with a little give that allows for your lower back to be treated, you should be fine.  Occasionally, I'll need a needle or two in my hips and they'll need to lower my underwear to about my butt crack...you're welcome for the visual ;)

I'm given a paper sheet to cover myself and after I get situated I ring the little bell to let them know I'm ready.  The treatment starts out face down with the paper sheet covering my buttocks and upper thighs.  I usually get about 20 needles on both sides (so ~40 total).  I don't know if that is the usual for everyone or if it's just me (I think it's just me).  They unhook my bra to get full access to my back, and after all the needles are placed, and the warming lamps are put over me, they leave me to lay there anywhere from 15-25 minutes, depending on how busy they are and how long I have to “cook”.

My own personal cupping set

If I have cupping done, they'll do that before the needle acupuncture.  After cupping, they apply this ointment that has a cooling effect on the skin.  I don't mind the smell, but my hubby hates it.   The funniest part is that it's called "Po Sum On"...like a redneck version of "pour some on!"

After my back is done, they come in and remove all the needles, then leave the room so I can flip over and lay face up.  This is when they'll do spots on my hands, feet, legs, face, and sometimes (rarely) my stomach.  I lay there again and cook...rinse, repeat.

But Needles Are Too Scary!

Most people are kinda freaked out by the whole needle thing.  Please understand that these needles are NOT the same as the needles you get at the doctors...those are injections...they are bigger because they are administering medicine or drawing blood.  Acupuncture needles are smaller than silk pins you use in sewing.

That's the scary needle in the middle...next to a .7 lead pencil.  The part of the needle you get "poked" with is the I-can-barely-see-it part on top.  Only the tiniest bit goes in your skin...they are put in very superficially.

Most of the time the needles don't hurt.  Sometimes they burn after they're put in, but then calm down after several seconds.  The ones in my sinuses usually hurt the whole time they're in...a hurt like you are poking at a black and blue.   And the ones on your ear hurt the whole time too.  Only one time did a needle hurt so badly that I cried.  My acupuncturist removed it immediately.  It was in my right shoulder and it felt like someone stabbed me.   Even after he took the needle out, I could still feel pain.  Again, that happened ONCE.  If I get, on average, 40 needles per week, that's over 2000 needles per year.  And I've been going for about 4 years.  Even if you count the first year that I went twice a month...that's still over 7000 needles.

All their needles are individually packaged and before each needle is placed, they apply a swab of alcohol to the area.  They don't wear rubber gloves...I asked about this a few weeks ago and was told that contact with blood is rare and even when bloodletting is done, the amount of blood is so little that it's inconsequential. *side note out of left field--did you know that not all urologists use gloves? :0 True story*

How Long Does The Treatment Take To Work And How Long Will It Last?

A treatment usually lasts me a week or two, depending on what's hurting, the weather, my activity level, etc.  Initially, it took 4 treatments for me to start feeling the positive, healing effects.  Everyone's body is different, so it can take people shorter or longer for it to work and the lasting effects will also vary.  Usually, I feel better the next day, but sometimes the acupuncture “kicks in” pretty immediately.  It's all very mysterious and magical to me.

Who Performs This Magic?

I realize I'm using the term “they” a lot...that's because I get treated by two different people.  Depending on the schedule, I'll see either just one of them for both back and front, -or- one for my back and the other for my front.  It doesn't matter much to me...both are licensed acupuncturists and are great at what they do.

If anyone is interested in finding an acupuncturist, I would recommend you ask around and see if you can get a recommendation from someone you trust.  You can even ask some of your western medicine doctors, as more and more doctors (especially pain management doctors) are getting educated about the healing effects of Chinese medicine.  And remember: do not ask Aunt Betty to poke you with sewing pins...it's not the same thing.

Costs And More Praise Of Acupuncture

That's the basic on how it's done.  I've been having acupuncture treatments for a few years now, and it has really helped with my chronic pain and has also kept me in better health.  I don't get sick as often and when I do, it doesn't seem to last as long.  I've taken various herb concoctions for pain, illness, anxiety...some have helped and some haven't.  All the herbs are out of pocket and cost anywhere from $15 -$30, and are about a week's supply.  Each acupuncture session is $85 and my insurance covers part of it.  I used to have to pay out of pocket for everything...when I did, they only charged me $60 per visit.

I love acupuncture and recommend it to everyone who will listen.

Have you ever had acupuncture?  If so, how did it work for you?  If you have yet to try it, what is the reason?  Anything that I didn't cover or other related questions for me?  Ask away!

Update-Facet Joint Injections Day 3

Just a quick update... (for some background click here)

I can no longer start a bonfire with my face...happy day!

Morning

When I woke up, my face was no longer hot to the touch and I slept better too...no insomnia! I did notice that my knees hurt...this also happened the last time I had a steroid shot. Last time the knee pain lasted approximately 2 days, so I made a *note to self* to have my acupuncturist address this later on.

Mid-Morning Acupuncture

My acupuncturist did normal needle acupuncture and some bloodletting on each cheek, on my left jaw, and on my third eye area, in hopes of relieving the neck pain and face pain caused by laying on my stomach during treatment. I felt immediate relief after the bloodletting in my jaw. After my treatment, my knees felt better and my cheeks were flushed again and warm to the touch. This went away after a few hours.

Evening

My left cheek still felt warm to me...but not to the touch. My neck was still tender from where the injections were, and I felt like I had more energy this afternoon...but that could be from the acupuncture.

The best part of the whole day was the random act of kindness that was gifted upon me...you can read about it here.

Bloodletting much?

So today's acupuncture treatment was more adventurous than usual.  First, let me give you the skinny on me and acupuncture.

I try to get acupuncture on a weekly basis, although since my ankle surgery, it's been a challenge to get there regularly.  I've been going for...hmmm... 4 years now?  Something like that.  Everyone's body is different, but, initially, it took me 4 treatments to start feeling the healing effects.  Before acupuncture I had started taking Vicodin on a regular basis for pain.  NOT GOOD.  Since I started treatments, it's very rare that I have to take something that strong.  I do have my flare ups with stuff, but overall acupuncture has really helped me. Like A LOT.

See, this guy is even smiling :)

Okay, so my adventures of today.  Well, my neck has been flaring up for the past couple of months...horrible burning pain down the side of my neck, into my shoulder blade, down to my shoulder, into my ear, and even to the side of my face.   Friggen awesome I tell ya.  I've been seeing this new doctor who's trying some different techniques to get it under control.   Problem with that is that it takes me 3 damn weeks every time I need an appointment with him.

I told my acupuncturist about the flare up and she did what I'll call--enhanced acupuncture treatment.  This is normal needle acupuncture with electro-stim action to enhance the effect.  BTW, the electro-stim devices literally looks like mini jumper cables....like if you wanted to give a jump to your matchbox cars.

Because I was in so much pain today, to enhance the effects of the already enhanced acupuncture treatment, she also did a little good-old-fashioned bloodletting.  Yes, you heard me right.  BLOODLETTING. And can I tell you that it's effing awesome!  I'll say it again, cause you probably think you're reading this wrong.

BLOODLETTING IS AWESOME.

How is it done?   She basically takes a small needle and gives you a little pin prick.  Then squeezes where she pricked you...and bam! Bloodletting.  It's just like when they have to prick your finger at your primary care doctor to test your iron levels...except it hurts a whole hell of a lot less.

I had this done before when I had a massive sinus induced headache.   It worked like a friggin charm...headache gone in a few hours. Today's bloodletting was not a letdown.  My neck burning has gone from a 6-7 on the pain scale (don't you just love that stupid pain scale they post in the doc's office?) to a 1-2.  It's not totally gone, but wayyyy better.  Even if the pain subsides just for a day, I'll be happy.  Hopefully I'll get a few days to a week out of it. We shall see.

Anybody else done this? Acupuncture? Mini-jumper cables? Bloodletting?
