Celebrate The Small Things -- Dec 18

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating...

  • Finished basements.  I could really write an entire blog post on the joys of finished basements, but I'll give you the highlights...
  1. I'm so happy that my children have a 'kid cave' that they can go to when their friends come over. Out of sight, out of mind I say...that's in the Best Parenting 101 handbook, right?
  2. My husband and I can shut the door to the basement and it dampens the noise. This is especially helpful when there is a room full of teenage girls.
  3. I rarely have to go down there and witness the horrorshow that it is. Of course, when I do have to venture down there (like yesterday) I want to just burn it down...but all the rest of the time it's awesome! Hey, guess who's cleaning the basement this weekend?

  • After feeling sick all week, I think I'm finally on the upswing (I'm not saying this too loudly, as I don't want to jinx it).  I will spare you all the details...believe me, you don't want to know!
  • I won a book! LG Keltner from Writing Off the Edge had a giveway of her new book and I won. Thanks LG for making me feel special! I shall now go buy a lottery ticket while my luck is still hot.
  • Today is the last day of school before Christmas break for my kids! I'm looking forward to spending some time with my babies!

What are you celebrating?

Celebrate The Small Things--Dec 4

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • I'm back!  I haven't posted in such a long time...what a loser I am.  I have a hard time with the spring and fall weather changes, so I've had a lot more bad days than good lately...but I'm going to make an effort to blog a bit more often...and by often, I mean actually posting more than once in a blue moon!  Many thanks to Lexa Cain for not kicking me off the "Celebrate" list!
  • The botox injections that I had into my back/neck at the end of August worked a bit better than the steroids I was getting.  I just went back this Tuesday for a second set (they last anywhere from 3-6 months), and they went a little smoother this time.  Note to self...do a blog post on this.
  • I had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We normally spend Thanksgiving with my in-laws, and this year two of my brother-in-laws (with their families) were there to celebrate with us.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love my in-laws?  They are the best...I am so blessed.
  • My hubby and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary last weekend.  Amazingly, I haven't driven him completely crazy just yet ;)  I love you Jason!!!

Celebrate The Small Things -- Sept 25

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • A brief return of health to the house! At least for the moment. My kids have already missed a handful of school days because they've been sick...and school only started three weeks ago. Let's hope they've gotten all the cooties out of the way for a while!

  • My new laptop. Our old laptop has been dropped one too many times and you can see some of its guts if you hold it just the right way...not good. Currently, I'm working on saving and moving files to the new computer.

That's pretty much it...my foot has been pretty crappy over the last few months...hoping my new orthotics will help, but I don't get them for another week so I'm making due until they come in. Say a little prayer that it doesn't rain too much in the meantime!

When Did I Get So Old?

Sunday night I had the opportunity to go out and see my best friend perform on stage for the first time. It was great fun and I felt like myself...a feeling that has been missing lately because rehabbing my latest surgery has felt like forever! Mike (my bestie) has been playing the guitar for a couple of years now and was looking to jam with someone. He found this event, called Flash Band, and decided to give it a go. (For more information on Flash Band, go here). Basically, you meet other local musicians, and then get together to play a show after only knowing each other for a month. The theme of Sunday night's Flash Band was 'British Invasion', which was awesome!

A wonderful night was had on Sunday, followed by a miserable Monday morning for me. Oh goodie. I woke up the next day feeling like someone beat the shit out of me. I hurt so bad all over. After seeing my kids out the door for their first day of school, I went back to bed and stayed there until early afternoon. Because of my medical condition, I know that I need to take things easy otherwise I end up regretting it, but this reaction caught me off guard. After all, I wasn't on my feet at all...Mike was kind enough to get me a seated ticket. I guess I thought that since I wouldn't be standing, that I would be okay. And my feet were okay...it's the rest of my body that objected! Too much time in the car...too much driving...too long being out. Man, I feel old! Back in the day, we used to go out all night long and I'd get up the next morning and function like a normal person...notsomuch anymore.

Ah, the joys of living with chronic pain. Sometimes, you never know when you'll have those bad days...they just hit you without warning. This is why I plan as much as I can...because I know that even with all the planning in the world, sometimes it is all for naught. I guess that next time I plan to see Flash Band (because there will be a next time--I love live music) I'll need my hubby to drive me. And I probably won't be able to stay to watch all the bands :( Oh, well. It was still worth it to be a part of Mike's fan club! :)

Mike and my daughter, jamming :)

Celebrate The Small Things -- August 14

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • My daughter's birthday!  She turns 15 this week...my baby!
  • My daughter "graduated" from allergy shots this week!   To read my expanded post, click here.
  • Emmie wanted me to tell all of you that she is celebrating her new backpack! She was so worn out from the excitement of it all that she needed to take a nap :)
  •

  • My new Kindle Fire!  The battery on my old Kindle was dieing...mostly because I keep it plugged in a lot and apparently that is bad.  Ooopsies!  But I loved my first Kindle so much, that I decided to get another one.  The transition was super easy...I just turned it on and hit some sync button and everything that was on my old Kindle was magically on my new one...weeeee!!!!  I'm super excited for now...you know, until Skynet becomes self aware and truly takes over the world :0
  • Also celebrating that our smart devices haven't become self aware... yet.

How Allergy Shots Have Changed My Daughter’s Life

Mary has had horrible allergies since she was about three.  I remember being in a Walmart, with Mary as a toddler in the back of a cart, trying to find children’s Benedryl because her eyes were so red and swollen it looked like she had been punched in the face.  Seriously, if you would have taken a snapshot of the two of us, I could have gotten anti-Mother-of-the-year...that’s how bad she looked.
By putting her on Claritin, and using the occasional Benedryl, we were able to keep her allergies (mostly) under control until she reached elementary school.  After having pneumonia twice in one year, her pediatrician suggested we see a pediatric pulmonologist because she suspected Mary had asthma.  The pulmonologist diagnosed Mary with asthma when she was six, and put her on a buttload of prescription steroids and various allergy medicines.

Although the asthma medicines helped, she was still sick way too often.

Summer 2010 allergy test--she was allergic to ALL the trees!
Many times a regular cold would progress into bronchitis and a few times pneumonia.  Her pulmonologist suggested that we see an allergist and get her allergy tested since it seemed that her asthma seemed to get worse in the Spring and Fall.  Mary was allergy tested for the most common trees, weeds, grasses, and household allergens in the summer of 2010.  Her back was one big welt!  We were finally able to convince her that it would in her best interest to start allergy shots, and we began with those in December 2010.

In the beginning we went for shots every week, but after a few months (I can’t remember if it was 3 or 6 months), we went every three weeks.  Yes, every three weeks for the past four+ years we’ve gone for shots.  It has definitely been a commitment, but has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.

Almost immediately after starting the shots we noticed that her colds didn’t last as long, and she hasn’t had bronchitis or pneumonia since starting them (knock on wood).  Mary went from being on five different prescription allergy and asthma medicines, to taking the occasional benedryl if she feels it necessary.  A friggen miracle!

Summer 2015--Compare the"A" column to #1-10 in the pic above...big difference!

The great thing about allergy shots is that they are "all natural"...since they are basically dosing you little by little with all of the things you are allergic too.  Over time, your body is supposed to build up an immunity to what you were originally allergic too.  Mary was retested in the summer of 2012 and then again this week.  Since her past two allergy tests came back negative, she is now considered to be in the clear for now.  Her allergist said that the shots will “last” for the average person, about 10-15 years.  Some people can go the rest of their lives without having to worry about allergies again.  Either way, I will take it!  Let’s cross our fingers that this lasts a good long time!

If there is anyone out there in a similar situation as Mary was, please see an allergist that you trust and get either yourself, or your loved one, evaluated. Allergy shots have truly changed her life!

Have you had a similar experience with Asthma or Allergies?

**All of the medicines that Mary was taking on a regular basis, if not daily, when she began her shots:  Flovent (asthma med), Singulair (asthma/allergy med), Nasonex (allergy med), Allegra (allergy med), Benedryl (allergy med), Elestat eye drops (allergy med), Xopenex (asthma med), Albuterol (asthma med).

Celebrate The Small Things -- August 7

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • A couple days of nice, low humidity weather!  Yesterday Emmie and I spent most of the afternoon outside on the screen porch.  Look at that belly!  I want to eat it up!

  • Being able to spend more time with my daughter and husband because this is one of the couple of weeks they have off from travel softball.  I'm enjoying it while I can, because it sure doesn't last long!
  • Our local weatherman, Doug Kammerer, visited our neighborhood!

My daughter even made it on tv for all of about 5 seconds...her 5 seconds of fame!  Hahaha!  That's her in the upper left hand corner.

Doug was kind enough to give us an autograph :)  He even played football with the kids.  That's Doug in the red shirt in the background...and my hubby with the baseball mitt in my yard.

It's been a very exciting week!

Celebrate The Small Things -- July 24

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • I finally made it to one of my daughter's softball games!  My body hated me for it, but I was happy to see her play...it's been a while.
  • I had a wonderful visit from my parents last week. My mom just couldn't wait around any longer for me to be well enough to travel to her (a three hour drive), so they came here for a visit :)  My kids had a nice time seeing their grandparents, and Emmie barked at them a bunch LOL
  • I "graduated" physical therapy a couple of weeks ago (be on the lookout for my 6 month sub-talar fusion update), but I still need to strengthen my leg muscles and all those little muscles in my feet.  So, I joined the medical gym...which basically means that I do all the excersices that I was doing in therapy, but unsupervised.  Things are going well...slow, but well.
  • I met a couple of women this week that are friends of a friend.  They were so nice and friendly, and I found our conversation to be easy.  Love meeting good people!
  • Got a couple of good deals for Amazon's 'Prime Day'...one of which was a new rope for Emmie.  Can you tell she loves it?

Emmie and her new rope

Emmie and her new rope--a better look :)

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.  I am thrilled to co-host this wonderful bloghop!

This week I'm celebrating:
  • I made dinner all by myself on Tuesday!  This is a huge big deal considering I haven't really had the energy or strength to do this in many months!  Woot!  On the menu was chicken cutlets, Rice-A-Roni, and some steamed broccoli (it was in a microwaveable bag...so a bit of a cheat, but who cares?!)
  • Got some new makeup, which always makes me a bit cheery
  • My daughter had her first tournament of the season last weekend, and her shoulder did well!  We used this tape that was recommended by the physical therapist, and she said it helped!

This will be my last Friday as co-host.  I've been feeling a bit disconnected from blogging lately, and think it's best to take a break.  I've had a wonderful time helping out, and still plan on celebrating as much as I can.  I hope to see you all around!

This week I'm celebrating:
  • pizza
  • Oreos
  • Twix
Yes, the list is short and simple, but I had a crap week!  No sunshine makes Katie a grumpy girl #grumpyKat  On a happier note...my hubby loves me.  He's the one who brought me this beautiful sight...

Okay, so maybe it's not all for me...but lets celebrate my husband too!!!

Celebrate The Small Things -- May 29

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.  I am thrilled to co-host this wonderful bloghop!

This week I'm celebrating:
  • air conditioning...how some people live without this is unimaginable to me  #firstworldproblems
  • having nice neighbors.  We recently got new neighbors just a few months ago and I'm so happy that they are normal people (I've had some not-so-normal ones in the past!).  They are a married couple with three kids, and they just got a dog this past weekend...he's so cute!  The kids named him Olaf :)  I'm hoping Olaf and Emmie will be best doggie friends one day.
  • flowers!  My hubs planted some annuals last weekend and they really perk up the house.  I especially love my flowers in the sun porch...something about them really makes me happy.

I apologize to everyone who left me comments last week...I was MIA last weekend and by the time I got a minute to hop on my pc this week, it just seemed to make more sense to wait to Friday and hop around and return comments.  Thanks for understanding!

Between the on and off rain killing my bones, and my therapist being harder on me, I've had a tough week.  Even so, there is always something to celebrate.

This week I'm celebrating:
  • Twix bars...life is always better with chocolate!
  • Online shopping.  Since I'm not really up to shopping like most normal people do, I really appreciate shopping from the comfort of my own bed.  This week I received a nail polish collection that I ordered from eBay.  Can't wait to try one on this weekend...mint green or grape purple first???
  • Emmie's vet and their staff.  These people are great...they love Emmie and Emmie seems to love everyone who works in their office.  I wish I could bring my kids to them...I like them better than my kids' pediatricians!
  • Emmie's yogurt face...think milk moustache...except in reverse... and with yogurt LOL

Emmie's yogurt face...can you see it on her chin?

This week I'm celebrating:
  • How sweet it is when my children snuggle up to Emmie and tell me how much they love "their puppy" :)
  • Driving!  I drove two towns away to go to acupuncture this week!  I tried driving with my ankle brace on with my sneaker, but that was so uncomfortable...I'm not a fan of the ankle brace.  So on the way back it was driving in my sock again...and it felt really good!
  • On my way back from acupuncture I went to the Starbucks drive thru and picked up a mocha latte...yummo!
  • Saw a rainbow, just washed in the clouds, yesterday afternoon.  It was a beautiful sunny day and the rainbow was a big surprise.  I was lucky to have my daughter with me to see it.

Celebrate The Small Things -- May 8

It's Friday and I'm Celebrating The Small Things!  The brainchild of ViklitCelebrate The Small Things is a weekly celebration where some bloggers have decided to post about something worth celebrating...no matter how big or small it is.  I am thrilled to co-host this wonderful bloghop!

This week I'm celebrating:
  • having company over last weekend.  We had my best friend and his family, and Jason's best friend and his family over for a barbeque.  The little ones had fun making messes on the screen porch, and Emmie had fun licking chips off the floor!
  • my physical therapist didn't totally kill me on Monday.  Either it was because she was being nice, or (and this is more likely) maybe because it was my first visit back and she didn't want to go full-on-evil-torture on day one.  We shall see, because I have PT again today.  Wish me luck!
  • I went joy riding!  I took my boot off and drove with just my sock on!  Which was very weird btw...but it worked...and there wasn't any pain!  I just looked like a looney bin putting the boot back on after I parked so I could get out and walk my son into his orthodontist appointment.  Seriously, I think I could do without the boot...but I'm listening to my doc's protocol and will have it on for another 5 weeks.  At least I can shower like a normal person, right?

What are you celebrating?

A to Z 2015 Reflections Post

Congratulations to everyone who conquered the A to Z Challenge!

Here we go! My thoughts on the 2015 A to Z Challenge...

My Own Personal Preferences

  • Some themes/posts are self explanatory by their title, but when they aren't, I really appreciated when people put just a short blurb at the top, or beginning of their post, explaining what their A to Z focused on. Having it done this way made it easier for me to just dive in.
  •  I find that I definitely prefer shorter posts. Unless it's a topic that I LOVE, or a person that has commented on my blog and I'm trying to return the comment, I usually leave the page if it's more than a few paragraphs.
  • Midway through the month, I went back to my routine and replied back to comments on my blog only after visiting and commenting on the original posters blog. Initially I started the challenge by not responding to comments on my blog, thinking this would save me some time, but it just caused me confusion since this was not the way I usually handle things. I'm a creature of habit!
  • I really, really, REALLY appreciate when a visitor just leaves me a direct link to their blog in the comments. When I click on a visitors name and it brings me to blogger...not too bad. But when it brings me to Google+, I pretty much want to slam my head into a wall. I fucking hate trying to navigate Google+...there's just too much clicking involved. This is a blog hop that involves over 1500 people. Please make it easy!

Recommendations/Improvements that I think can be made with the Challenge itself (the first two are the same thoughts that I had last year)

  • A registering system where you can fill in your blog topic instead of having to pick from pre-made ones.
  • All the blog topics would be sorted alphabetically. This recommendation is a direct result of my OCD.
  • The A to Z team could include a tutorial on how to include a direct link to your blog when you comment (using HTML fancy language). This would eliminate the Google+ head banging feeling that many of us get.
  • I love the new idea for the A-Z Challenge themed t-shirts. You know what I'd like better than a t-shirt? An A to Z bandana! I can put it on Emmie :)

Now that I'm done complaining... here are some A to Z bloggers that I enjoyed:

  • Heather @Waiting is the HardestPart--Heather shared with us how much of an impact the show, The X-Files, made on her life. Her theme makes me want to do a rewatch...like Right.Now. I enjoyed her point of view on her topics as well as the funny commentary by Stormy, her sidekick, at the end of the posts. Plus, she has a blow up alien doll...and that's cool.
  • Roslyn @Fangirl Stitches--She shared geek themed cross-stitch posts. Geeky mixed with art...I'm all over that!
  • Tyrean @Everyday Writer, TyreanMartinson--Tyrean focused her theme on featuring other bloggers. Not only did I think that this was extremely generous of her, but it shed some light on some new bloggers that I found to be really interesting.

Overall, I'm happy that I accepted the challenge for a second year. If I do it again next year, I think I'll do something similar as this year and keep it really simple and short. Who knows...maybe Emmie will help me out again :)

Many thanks to everyone who visited my blog and left comments...it was most appreciated!

What are your thoughts? Are you glad you took the challenge?

This week I'm celebrating:
  • I got my cast off!!!  Hell to the fucking yeah!  I have a boot for another 6 weeks, but who cares?  I can scratch to my hearts content and don't have to worry about preparing myself every time I step into the shower.  It truly is the little things...
  • the end of the A to Z!!!  I'm ready for a nap :)  Thanks to everyone who visited and left comments.  If you'd like to catch up on any posts you missed, check out the new tab above or click here.  Be sure to stay tuned for my A to Z Reflections post on May 4th.

Zzzzzzz....

An A to Z Challenge from the point of view of the newest member of the family...Emmie is a 4-ish year old pit bull mix that we rescued on March 20, 2015.

Now that I have a forever home, I have made myself comfortable.  When I'm not being silly, or greeting my humans when they come home, or barking at home appliances and instruments, or spying on people, or playing with my rope, or going outside, or giving kisses, or eating out of my Kong, or being undeniably cute, I enjoy sleeping...

I even fall asleep when I'm supposed to be doing my perimeter checks at the front window!

I love yogurt!  My mommy once tried to mix bananas in with it...yuck!  I definitely don't like bananas.

Do you have a favorite snack?

The humans think I'm crazy, but I'm hunting the Vashta Nerada!  They live in the shadows!

Katie here...if you don't know what the Vashta Nerada are, then go here...it's a Doctor Who reference.  Yup, Emmie is a Doctor fan too.  That's the real reason why we adopted her ;)
